Aussie Zen took the plaudits in the Cup, the blue ribbon event of the 2016 Kata Group International Cricket 7’s, following victory over Rowdiez of Qatar and Dubai to round off a fantastic three day’s cricket at the Republic Ground in Chalong, Phuket on Friday. The locally based side clattered 91-1 with Rishi Sadarangani’s fine knock contributing heavily along with Anthony Van Blerk’s 26 not out and 1-12 with the ball as well as yet another Stuart Hamilton retirement, with Rowdiez mustering 52-2 in reply.

Zen had earlier seen off the challenge of the veteran international outfit CBB’s in the semi-final, whilst runners-up Rowdiez had defeated Katherine Bushrangers of Northern Territory. Stuart Hamilton of Aussie Zen added much to the success of his team over the three days of the tournament with five retirements of over 30 in seven innings.
The Bowl division went to New South Wales outfit Galah CC who amassed an impressive 81-1 thanks to a magnificent innings of 33 not out from Chris Alexander against Falcons of the UAE who made a gallant 60-3 in reply after earlier eliminating Victoria’s Southern Stars in the play-off match.

As predicted the three early games carried over were pivotal with wins for Galah, Aussie Zen and the Stars determining the final standings after the round robin stage. Southern Stars all-rounder Dale Chandler put in another accomplished performance as he retired with 30 to his name.
Participants retired to the luxurious Kata Beach Resort & Spa, one of two tournament hotels along with the Andaman Seaview for the Awards Dinner where the trophy presentations took place.

The Kata Group International Cricket 7’s formed part of the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour, Phuket Cricket Week. At the close of play ACST Chairman, Michael ‘Cat’ Maher summed up the mood of the events. “It’s been truly fantastic to be around so many smiling people. Every player, official, spectator, and those assisting at the two grounds have made it such a fantastic success”. “Any tiredness in the unprecedented heat is soon forgotten when you’re around so many fantastic people”, he added.

The next ACST event will be the 2016 Thailand International Cricket Sixes, which will be held in Bangkok in late October.
